Returnal fails in this regard as dying rarely ever encouraged me to try again, but rather cut my gaming sessions short to try again tomorrow. It’s why so many games in this genre keep their runs to around the hour mark as investing anything more into a failed attempt can be “delete the game” levels of frustrating. The mark of any good roguelike is how eager players are to go for another run after dying and losing everything.

This isn’t some weird flex, it’s just to highlight that Returnal has a lot to live up to, especially after myself and many others without PS5s waited quite a while for it to come to PC. Nuclear Throne, Hades, Slay the Spire, Dead Cells, FTL, Darkest Dungeon, both Risk of Rains and both Rogue Legacys (Legacies?), not to mention both often forgotten Hand of Fates… I’ve played them all.

I even cut my teeth on the Spelunky Classic demo. I was playing The Binding of Isaac when it was still a Flash game.

I’ve 100 percent Enter the Gungeon on both PC and console. This is a genre that I’m rather fond of and have sunk thousands of hours into games that pioneered. Just for context as we get deeper in here: Returnal is likely the biggest budget game in the modern roguelike genre. That preview is required reading so go give it a look before we continue. Highly recommend the game, if you are at all interested it in and haven’t decided yet.Recently Hypertext published a review in progress for the PC port of Returnal and now, just like the central conceit of the game, I have returned for a more definite appraisal with more hours in the game under my belt. Anyway, I’m looking forward to going at him soon. Once the boss starts jumping at you while at the same time using his other skills, things get really tough. I did have some good parasites on me this time, like the one that heals you at low integrity and the one that gives you an extra life basically, but it was still not enough. No idea how exactly I’ll be able to defeat him, but I hope for some good items and just getting better at the game.

I just died to the first boss after killing him a few times and seeing multiple forms of it, and I’m excited to get back at it. No matter what it is, I’m not regretting getting the game. Maybe it’s the sci-fi, maybe it’s the intriguing story, maybe it’s a much more fast paced gameplay, compared to a slow and methodical gameplay of Souls, maybe it’s excellent visuals, sounds, and Dual Sense implementation. Returnal, at first glance, seemed like it could be Demons Souls but in space.Īfter playing it for a while, there are definitely similarities, like high difficulty for example and cool boss battles, but at the same time it’s a much better game (to me).

I like Demons Souls, but I didn’t love it and the high difficulty is really punishing sometimes, plus the gameplay feels a bit dated, given it’s a remake of an older game that makes sense. I was a bit worried because I was kind of burned by Demons Souls. Due to high praise from the critics and intriguing gameplay footage that was shown just before the launch of the game, I decided to give it a go. I knew it was coming, but it looked somehow not very exciting for me, even though I’m a big sci-fi fan. Wonder how many of you lucky PS5 owners are playing Returnal?įor the longest time, I didn’t have this game on my radar.
